Professional athletes like NFL and tennis players, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, movie stars, Hollywood producers, and even a President of the United States of America all have one thing in common: they all had a coach.
The most successful achievers of our time and centuries past have had a coach, mentor, or some source of forward-progress accountability. Coaching, like mentorship, is the gift of objective perspective, experience, clarity, and accountability.
Business, life (or personal), and success coaching are terms first used by self-help guru Anthony Robbins. Since that time, those words have been the catchphrases of “self-help gurus” around the world. In fact, coaching has grown into a billion-dollar industry – and there is good reason for that!
Studies have shown that individuals who are actively coached can have results exponentially greater than those who are not, but the “proof is in the pudding,” as they say. Testimonials and stories of life and business transformations as a result of coaching abound.
Life coaching, often referred to as personal coaching, takes on an entirely more significant role. People’s lives are filled with busy schedules, enormous responsibilities, high stress levels, and incredible mental and emotional challenges. From the busy people who are looking to live more joyful, balanced lives to the lost souls of individuals trying to find their place in this world, life coaching has become a common resource. Many people pose the question, “What is the difference between a life coach and a therapist?” The answer is simple yet enormous. A therapist will often drag you back to your childhood, help you relive your most painful memories, and find deep emotional excuses for people to use as reasons why they do not excel and achieve. A life coach, however, will not look back to your deep-rooted childhood experiences. Instead, a life coach will look at the “why” in what is holding you back and help you overcome any emotional or mental obstacles. A life coach will bring inspiration, motivation, and accountability to your life and help you live the life you want.
The first step on your coaching journey is the search for a high-quality, qualified, experienced coach. Anthony Robbins often touts that being coached by him personally comes at a cost of $1 million per year. Fortunately, there are less expensive solutions. The word “coach” has become a commonly used term in the last decade, mostly because the occupation of being a coach sounds quite rewarding to most people, with the added bonus of being able to work with a select group of clientele on a flexible schedule. Unfortunately, many of these so-called “coaches” may have passed a certification course and received the appropriate credentials, but that does not qualify them as having the true gifts, abilities, and experience to be a coach.
Many coaching prospects often ask the question, “How do I know if my coach has ‘been there and done that’ before he or she tries to guide me on such serious matters?” The honest answer is that you can have no such assurance. Many coaching companies are the equivalent of franchises, selling the business opportunity and territories without attention to the natural abilities, gifts, talents, and experience levels of their coaches. That is the difference between them and us.
